Though the waves may crash over, we reemerge like the Toka a Tirikawa.

This whakataukī calls on us to embody that same resolute spirit of Tirikawa in our pursuit of our whānau and community wellbeing. It reminds us that kōrero tuku iho is not only our foundation, but our pae tawhiti. To be resolute is to trust in the wisdom of our own indigenous systems, to re-indigenise the spaces we work in, and to lead with courage, belief, and purpose.

Like Te Toka a Tirikawa, we may be tested by challenge and change, but we rise again, steadfast in who we are and what we stand for.

As we gather here in Tauranga Moana, we honour the mauri that connects us to the enduring strength that binds people, whenua, and aspirations. Together, we rise as Tirikawa rises: resolute, purposeful, and unshaken.

The Hui ā-Tau is a two-day gathering of thought leaders, practitioners, and advocates in Māori health, physical activity, kai, and wellbeing. Together we’ll explore how mātauranga Māori and our indigenous systems continue to shape and strengthen the future of hauora while remaining resolute in our purpose and unwavering in our pursuit of wellbeing for our people.
