We are proud to celebrate Toi Tangata board member, Renee Smith-Apanui, who has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Emerging Leader of the Year category at the Robert Walters New Zealand Leadership Awards 2026.
Renee is a visionary leader whose influence spans governance, public service, kaupapa Māori enterprise and systems change. As Co-founder and Pou Tāhū/Managing Director of Ōrua, an award-winning kaupapa Māori architectural practice, she is helping reshape the built environment through mātauranga, innovation and Māori excellence.
Since joining the Toi Tangata board in 2024, Renee has brought strategic insight, governance expertise, and a deep commitment to improving outcomes for whānau, hapū and iwi.
Her governance experience includes associate board role for Te Arataura (Waikato-Tainui), and past roles with Paediatric Society NZ, He Hono Wāhine, and many advisory roles across DHB’s and the Health Quality Safety Commission.
Renee's leadership is grounded in service, courage, and a commitment to creating lasting change. We congratulate her on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to seeing the continued impact of her leadership for Māori communities and future generations.
